Spring into action

12 amazing activities for parents to do with kids this spring

With warmer temperatures, more hours of daylight, and bursts of color, spring can be full of energy and hope. The Week Junior has picked 12 activities to help your child make the most of the season. Whether it’s creating and baking, learning something new, or exploring the outdoors, we’ve got something to interest everyone. While some activities can be tried alone or with friends or family, some may require a helping hand. Good luck, and don’t forget to email us and share a photo of the fun to hello@theweekjunior.com.

Create and bake

Build an apple bird feeder

You need: apple, apple corer, string, three small sticks, sunflower seeds

Carefully remove the apple core with the corer. Thread the string through the hole in the middle of the apple, then tie the end to one of the sticks. Push the sunflower seeds into the top half of the apple for the birds to eat, and insert the last two sticks into the side of the apple to serve as perches for the birds. Lastly, hang the apple onto a tree or bush, and see how many birds you can spot pecking at the seeds and apple.

Make chocolate cornflakes cakes

You need: 3½ tablespoons butter, 3½ ounces chocolate (broken into chunks), 3 tablespoons golden syrup, ½ cup cornflakes, 12 cupcake liners

Slowly melt the butter, chocolate, and golden syrup together in a saucepan on a stovetop, or in a microwave-safe bowl in the microwave, taking care not to let it burn. Allow it to cool a little before mixing in the cornflakes. Stir the ingredients together and spoon the mixture into 12 cupcake liners arranged on a baking tray. Put tray in the refrigerator to set.

Make a tin-can wind chime

You need: paintbrush, colored acrylic paint, 4 tin cans (empty and clean, with tape around the top to cover sharp edges), hammer, nail, scissors, string, 4 beads

Paint each tin a different color. When the paint has dried, ask an adult to tap a small hole in the top of each tin with the hammer and nail. Next, cut a length of string around 12 inches long and tie a bead to one end. Tie a knot in the string about 4 inches above the bead, then carefully feed the string through the hole in one tin, so the knot and bead are on the inside. Do the same with each of the other tins, using different lengths of string. Tie the tins from a branch or a clothesline and wait for the wind to blow.

Bake a loaf of bread

You need: 3 cups whole-wheat or white bread flour, .25 oz. sachet of fast-action dried yeast, 1 teaspoon salt, 2 tablespoons olive oil, 1 tablespoon honey, 2-pound loaf pan

1. Mix the flour, yeast, and salt with your hands in a large bowl. Stir 10 ounces of hot water with the oil and honey, then stir these into the dry ingredients to make a soft dough.
2. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5 minutes until the dough no longer feels sticky. Sprinkle with a little more flour if you need it.
3. Put the dough in the pan, cover with a plastic food bag, and leave it to rise for 1 hour. Make sure the dough has filled the pan, and it no longer springs back when you press it with your finger.
4. Heat the oven to 400[degree symbol] F. Make a few cuts across the top of the loaf with a knife, then bake for 30 to 35 minutes until the loaf is risen and golden. Remove the bread from the pan, place onto a cooling rack, and tap the base of the bread to check that it is cooked (it should sound hollow). Let cool.

Learn something new

Build a bug hotel

You need: a small, clear plastic bottle, things to put inside (like sticks, leaves, tree bark, and pine cones from your local area), string

Cut the ends off a clear, plastic bottle to make a tube. Fill the tube with as many of the sticks, leaves, bark, and pine cones as you can, making sure they don’t fall out. Next, use a string to hang your bug hotel from a tree or tuck it under a bush. Wait a few days and see who visits.

Learn about birds

Observe different bird behaviors and what they mean. Start by heading to an outdoor space, like your backyard or a park, where different bird species can be seen. Research what types of birds you’re looking at using the free Audubon Bird Guide App, and try to identify what they’re doing. They could be flocking (creating large groups to fly or feed, creating safety in numbers), preening (cleaning their feathers using their beak or feet), hiding (using camouflage or cover to protect themselves from predators), or singing (communicating using calls and songs). Write down your findings in a notebook, recording things like which behaviors are most common or how they differ between bird species.

Create a collage self-portrait

You need: newspapers, magazines, scissors, paper, glue stick

Try learning more about yourself by creating a self-portrait that reflects your personality. Start by cutting out images and words from a newspaper or magazine. Think about what reflects you as a person: Your interests, hobbies, and how you are feeling are good places to begin. Arrange the words and pictures onto a sheet of paper before gluing them down. This allows you to experiment with where you want to place everything and to see how the shapes and colors combine. When you’re ready, glue them into place. Ask your family and friends if they recognize you from the self-portrait.

Grow your own food

You need: seed trays or small pots with holes in the bottom for drainage, seed compost, spring-growing seeds like tomatoes or pole beans, clear plastic bag

Fill the pots almost to the top with seed compost. Place the seeds on the surface, cover them with some more compost, and water gently. Leave the pots on a warm, sunny windowsill covered with a plastic bag until you see shoots appear. Once this happens, space them out into larger pots. In late spring, plant them in the ground or in compost bags, and water every day. Tall climbing plants, like pole beans, will need strong supports like a trellis or stakes.

Explore the outdoors

Try Geocaching

Geocaching is a game that people play all over the world. Just like a treasure hunt, you search for tiny boxes called caches that have been hidden in all kinds of places nearby. It’s a great game for exploring the outdoors with family and friends and can be played anywhere, including in the city, the woods, the beach, or even on mountaintops.

Create an account online here or through the Geocaching app to view a map of geocaches near you. Don’t forget to bring a pen. When you find the geocache, sign and date the logbook. Place the geocache back where you found it and record your experience online.

Organize a team game

Warmer weather makes spring the perfect season for outdoor team sports. Being active outdoors with friends and family is not only fun, but it’s also great for your physical and mental health. So gather some friends, find a bat, a ball, or a Frisbee—or anything you have on hand—and organize a team sport. Try a game that you haven’t played before, like Ultimate Frisbee, volleyball, or cricket, and you might inspire other teams to start a tournament.

Map your neighborhood

No matter how long you’ve lived in your area, there’s always more you can discover. Making a map is not only creative and useful, but it also helps you become more aware of the world around you. So grab a pen and some paper and take a walk, making notes and sketching as you go. Notice if your street is straight or curvy, and how many other houses, stores, and other buildings are there. Think about natural elements like trees, ponds, or parks. Include this information as you sketch out your map. Use color to mark the different places and include a key: For example, the houses could be marked as red squares and the trees as green triangles.

Track and trail

Set up a trail outside for others to follow. This works really well in a wooded area, but you can try it anywhere, even inside your home. Use twigs, leaves, stones, or any other available materials to make basic signs. These can be arrows and crosses to show the way and warn of obstacles along the path, and circles to tell people they’ve reached the finish point. Think about how long you want your trail to be, how you can protect it from getting damaged as people follow the signs you’ve created, and whether there will be a prize at the end.

Creative writing is a fun way to express your thoughts and emotions.

One form of creative writing is a short story. “A story is like a playground for your imagination,” Lee Overtree, co-founder and creative director of The Story Pirates, told The Week Junior. “It’s a great place to experiment and try new ideas,” Overtree said.

Write a story from your imagination that is inspired by the Photos of the Week section in The Week Junior. (It can be any photo from any week.) Then go to storypirates.com/theweekjunior to submit your story and have a chance to be featured on an upcoming podcast episode! A message from our editor-in-chief

All of us at The Week Junior are heartbroken at the news of the shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. I have heard from many parents who aren’t sure what to say to their children, and I’d like to try to help.

First, know that even if you try to shield your children from this news, all but the youngest will hear about it. As difficult as it is, it’s better for them if they hear about it from you and know that you will discuss difficult news with them when it happens. You are a source of truth and comfort to them.

My advice is to be honest, speak calmly, and keep it simple. Encourage kids to say how they feel. Let them ask you questions, and respond as best you can. Mention the people who helped. Limit visual media in your home as the images can be upsetting.

The fact that this happened at a school—a place of familiarity and safety—makes it especially troubling to many children. Emphasize their school’s safety measures. Validate any concerns they have. If you notice behavior changes, contact your school psychologist or pediatrician.

This is a time to reinforce your family’s values. You could donate to one of the many fundraisers that have been established for victims’ families, for example. It’s powerful for kids to feel that they are helping. Above all, hold your children tight and let them know how much you love them.

Explain the news in a thoughtful way

The Week Junior covered the tragedy at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, in Issue 112. Andrea also wrote about it in her editor’s note. The goal of our coverage, in words and images, is to present the facts in a thoughtful, calm, and age-appropriate way while avoiding upsetting details and focusing on calls for change. If you feel comfortable, we urge you to discuss the story with your children and answer any questions they may have.

Help kids understand their feelings

Also in Issue 112, we include a special two-page story about coping with the range of feelings children may experience when upsetting things happen in the world. We interviewed two experts in child psychology to provide this advice, which includes talking to trusted adults, doing things kids enjoy, and taking action to support others. We also include a page where kids can write or draw how they feel, another step experts recommend.

Hello to The Week Junior community,

We know that many children have questions about what's happening in Ukraine. Here are a few thoughts about how to handle these sensitive discussions.

• Answer their questions honestly and calmly, without providing more detail than is appropriate for their maturity level.
•  Look at a map together and show them where Russia and Ukraine are. Explain that many countries around the world, including the US, do not support this action and are taking steps to stop the conflict.
• Ask children what they know and what they think. Giving them a chance to share their thoughts helps them feel empowered, and letting them know you are there to listen is reassuring. If they are worried about something that is inaccurate, you can correct it.
• Focus on the helpers, from the nations and nonprofits sending food and supplies to the neighboring countries taking refugees in. 
• Reinforce your family's values. You can say you are concerned for the Ukrainian people and the members of the military who are involved and that you hope for peace.

Any changes to the Terms will be in effect as of the "Last Updated Date" referenced on the Site. You should review these Terms before purchasing any product available through this Site.

These Terms apply to:

Purchases of our printed magazines, bookazines and books, which we refer to in these Terms as print products.

Our digital magazines, bookazines and books, which we refer to in these terms and conditions as digital products. You may need to use third party software to access our digital products. This can vary depending on your device or operating system. We are not responsible for the functionality, reliability or security of any third party software or service through which you access our digital products.

Subscriptions to our print products and our digital products. Subscriptions are automatically recurring, or continuing, supplies of our print products and our digital products for either an indefinite period or a fixed period as specified at the time you subscribe.

Orders that are not subscriptions we call single issue orders. If your basket includes multiple single issue print products or digital products, each item will constitute a single issue order. If your basket contains a mix of single issue orders and subscriptions, the parts of these Terms that apply to single issue orders will apply to each individual single issue, and the parts that apply to subscriptions will apply to each subscription.

Where in these Terms we refer simply to a product, that means any print product, digital product, single issue or subscription.

These Terms should be read alongside the Website Terms of Service that apply generally to the use of our Site. You should also carefully review our Privacy Notice before placing an order for products through this Site.

Order Acceptance and Cancellation

You agree that your order is an offer to buy, under these Terms, all products listed in your order. All orders must be accepted by us, or we will not be obligated to sell the products to you. We contact you to confirm we’ve received your order and we accept it, depending on what’s included in your order, when the following happens:

For single issue print products, when we dispatch them to you. If your basket contains multiple single issues, we will treat each as a separate order;

For single issue digital products, when we make the digital product available for download or viewing. Usually this will be immediately;

For subscriptions to print products, when we dispatch the first publication included in your subscription. Usually this will be either the next edition published or the most recent available edition depending on stock;

For subscriptions to digital products, when we make the first publication included in your subscription available for download or viewing. Usually this will be immediately.

Sometimes we reject orders

Sometimes we reject orders. This is done at our discretion but reasons for rejection may be, for example, because a print product is unexpectedly out of stock, because the issuer of your payment card refuses to authorise payment to us, because you are located outside our delivery areas, as stated on our website, or because the product was mispriced by us. When this happens, we let you know as soon as possible and refund any sums you have paid.

We can also reject part of an order if for example your basket contains multiple single issue orders, multiple subscriptions, or a mix of single issues and subscriptions. If we reject part of your order, we will refund you in relation to that part. For example, if your order contains multiple single issues and we are unable to fulfil one of those single issue orders, we will refund you in respect of that one single issue. We will charge you for the parts of your order that we do dispatch.

Prices and Payment Terms

All prices, discounts, and promotions posted on this Site are subject to change without notice. The price charged for a product will be the price in effect at the time the order is placed and will be set out in your order confirmation email, although subscriptions may be subject to price increases in the future. If your subscription renews, it may renew at a different price. We will send you a renewal notice prior to charging you the new subscription rate and you will be able to end your subscription if you do not want it to continue at the new price. Posted prices do not include applicable taxes or charges for shipping and handling. All such applicable taxes and charges will be added to your order total. We strive to display accurate price information, however, we may, on occasion, make inadvertent typographical errors, inaccuracies, or omissions related to pricing and availability. We reserve the right to correct any errors, inaccuracies, or omissions at any time and to cancel any orders arising from such occurrences.

We may offer, from time to time, promotions on the Site that may affect pricing and that are governed by terms and conditions separate from these Terms. If there is a conflict between the terms for a promotion and these Terms, the promotion terms will govern.

Terms of payment are within our sole discretion and payment must be received by us before we accept an order. We accept the payment methods that are presented to you during the order process for all purchases. You represent and warrant that (i) the credit card information you supply to us is true, correct, and complete, (ii) you are duly authorized to use such credit card for the purchase, (iii) charges incurred by you will be honored by your credit card company, and (iv) you will pay charges incurred by you at the posted prices, including shipping and handling charges and all applicable taxes, if any, regardless of the amount quoted on the Site at the time of your order. You are responsible for telling us about any changes to your credit card or other payment information. We may cancel your order if we are unable to take payment due to incorrect or outdated payment information.

Shipments; Delivery; Title and Risk of Loss

We will arrange for shipment of print products to you. Please check the individual print product page for specific delivery options. You will pay all shipping and handling charges specified during the ordering process. Shipping and handling charges are reimbursement for the costs we incur in the processing, handling, packing, shipping, and delivery of your order.

Title and risk of loss to a print product will pass to you upon full payment and delivery. Shipping and delivery dates are estimates only and cannot be guaranteed. We are not liable for any delays in shipments.

If your order includes a Subscription to a digital product, you will have access to any issues of the digital product included for as long as you subscribe. Once your subscription ends you lose access and you will not have any title in respect of those digital products. If you purchase a single issue digital product, we will make this available to you immediately.

Returns and Refunds

If you change your mind after purchasing a single issue print product or single issue digital product you will not be eligible for a refund unless you are told otherwise during your order process. To request a refund, you must contact us on the toll-free telephone number or email address stated in your order confirmation.

If you change your mind after purchasing a subscription you can cancel at any time using your online subscriber account, or by contacting us on the telephone number or email address stated in your order confirmation.. If you cancel you will receive a refund for any unmailed print products or unpublished digital products for the rest of your current subscription term.

If you consented to an automatically renewing subscription you will receive a notice confirming your renewal details, including your renewal date and any change in price, before you are charged for a new subscription period.

Refunds are usually processed within approximately fourteen business days of our receipt of your cancellation request. Your refund will be credited back to the same payment method used to make the original purchase on the Site.

We can withdraw products

We can stop providing a print product or digital product, including a subscription to any print product or digital product. We’ll let you know as soon as we can in advance. If you are subscribed to a withdrawn product you will have the option to receive another print product or digital product (as applicable) for the remainder of your subscription contract term or end the subscription contract and receive a refund of any sums you’ve paid in advance for issues of the print product or digital product which won’t be provided. We won’t refund you for any print product or digital product you have already received.

We can end our contract with you

We can end our contract with you for a subscription for any reason at our sole discretion. If we end your subscription contract you will either receive a refund of any payments made for unmailed print products or unpublished digital products for the rest of your current subscription term and we will take no further payments from you.

We are not responsible for websites we link to

Where our products contain links to other sites and resources provided by third parties, these links are provided for your information only. Those links should not be interpreted as approval by us of those linked websites or the information, or any products or services, you may obtain from them. We have no control over the contents of those sites or resources. There is more information about the links we include to other websites in our Privacy Notice.

Warranty and Disclaimers

We work continuously to ensure our products meet your needs. However, for legal reasons, we offer the products without warranties unless specifically stated in our Privacy Notice or any other agreements or terms entered into by you and Future that are governed by, or incorporate, these Terms (“Other Terms”). The law says we need to explain this with specific language in capital letters. Here is that explanation:

OUR SOLE AND ENTIRE MAXIMUM LIABILITY AND YOUR SOLE AND EXCLUSIVE REMEDY SHALL BE LIMITED TO THE ACTUAL AMOUNT PAID BY YOU FOR THE PRODUCTS YOU HAVE ORDERED THROUGH OUR SITE.

IF APPLICABLE LAW DOES NOT ALLOW ALL OR ANY PART OF THE ABOVE LIMITATION OF LIABILITY TO APPLY TO YOU, THE LIMITATIONS WILL APPLY TO YOU ONLY TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW.

Goods Not for Resale or Export

You represent and warrant that you are buying products or services from the Site for your own personal or household use only, and not for resale or export. You further represent and warrant that all purchases are intended for final delivery to locations within the US.

We respect your privacy and are committed to protecting it. Our Privacy Notice governs the processing of all personal data collected from you in connection with your purchase of products through the Site.

Force Majeure

We will not be liable or responsible to you, nor be deemed to have defaulted or breached these Terms, for any failure or delay in our performance under these Terms when and to the extent such failure or delay is caused by or results from acts or circumstances beyond our reasonable control, including, without limitation, acts of God, flood, fire, earthquake, explosion, governmental actions, war, invasion or hostilities (whether war is declared or not), terrorist threats or acts, riot or other civil unrest, national emergency, revolution, insurrection, epidemic, lockouts, strikes or other labor disputes (whether or not relating to our workforce), or restraints or delays affecting carriers or inability or delay in obtaining supplies of adequate or suitable materials, materials or telecommunication breakdown or power outage.

Dispute Resolution; Binding Arbitration; Class Action and Jury Waiver

PLEASE READ THIS SECTION (THE “ARBITRATION AGREEMENT”) CAREFULLY. IT AFFECTS YOUR LEGAL RIGHTS. IT PROVIDES FOR RESOLUTION OF MOST DISPUTES THROUGH INDIVIDUAL ARBITRATION INSTEAD OF COURT TRIALS AND CLASS ACTIONS. THIS SECTION ALSO CONTAINS A JURY TRIAL WAIVER AND A WAIVER OF ANY AND ALL RIGHTS TO PROCEED IN CLASS, COLLECTIVE, CONSOLIDATED (OTHER THAN ANY BATCHING PROCEDURES CONDUCTED BY THE ARBITRAL FORUM), PRIVATE ATTORNEY GENERAL, OR REPRESENTATIVE ACTION IN ARBITRATION OR LITIGATION TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW.

Definitions

“ADR Services” means ADR Services, Inc., www.adrservices.com.

“ADR Services Batching Procedure” means for the ADR Services to (i) administer claims in at least 20 batches, with the discretion to create additional batches if ADR Services finds that they are necessary to facilitate the efficient resolution of demands; and (ii) apply a single initial filing fee and administrative fee per batch for each side with respect to the fees set forth in ADR Services’ then-current Mass Consumer Non-Employment Arbitration Fee Schedule.

“ADR Services Rules” means ADR Services rules and procedures then in effect.

“Dispute” means any dispute, claim, or controversy between you and Future Parties, including but not limited to disputes, claims, or controversies related to or arising from the Services, or these Terms or Other Terms, including, without limitation, those relating to the formation, breach, termination, enforcement, interpretation, validity, scope, or applicability of the Terms, Other Terms, and the Arbitration Agreement included herein.

“FAA” means that Federal Arbitration Act, 9 U.S.C. § 512.

“Future Parties” means Future and Future’s predecessors in interest, successors, and assigns, as well as its respective past, present, and future parents, subsidiaries and affiliates.

“NAM” means National Arbitration and Mediation (www.namadr.com).

“NAM Rules” means NAM rules and procedures, including any supplementary rules and fee schedules, then in effect.

“Notice Address” means ArbitrationNotices@Futurenet.com, to which a Notice of Dispute from you to Future Parties must be emailed.

“Notice of Dispute or “Notice” means a notice of Dispute from you to any Future Party.

“Opt-Out Notice” means the written opt-out notice to opt out of the Arbitration Agreement.

“Opt-Out Period” means within 30 days of the date that you first purchase a Product after the posting of these Terms.

“Products” means products made available for purchase through the Site.

Mandatory Individual Arbitration

Any Dispute, whether such Dispute arose before, on, or subsequent to you entering these Terms, and if not resolved through the informal dispute resolution procedure set forth below, shall be exclusively resolved by individual, binding arbitration in accordance with this Arbitration Agreement. The arbitrator, and not any federal, state, or local court or agency, shall have exclusive authority to resolve any Disputes relating to the interpretation, applicability, enforceability, or formation of this Arbitration Agreement, including any claim that all or any part of this Arbitration Agreement is void or voidable. The arbitrator shall also be responsible for determining all threshold arbitrability issues, including issues relating to whether these Terms are unconscionable or illusory, in whole or in part, and any defense to arbitration, including waiver, delay, laches, or estoppel.

Notwithstanding the foregoing and the Class Action/Jury Trial Waiver below, you and Future Parties each retain the right to seek injunctive or other equitable relief in a court of competent jurisdiction to prevent the actual or threatened infringement, misappropriation or violation of a party’s copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets, patents, or other IP rights. Any legal action by Future Parties against a non-consumer or its interactions with governmental and regulatory authorities shall not be subject to arbitration. Either party may also elect to have Disputes heard in small claims court seeking only individualized relief, so long as the action is not removed or appealed to a court of general jurisdiction.

To the fullest extent permissible by applicable law, all claims against Future Parties, including but not limited to claims arising out of or relating in any way to the Products or the Terms, must be filed within one year after such claim or cause of action arose or it will be forever barred.

If any court or arbitrator determines that this Arbitration Agreement is void or unenforceable for any reason as to Disputes arising before the date of posting of this Arbitration Agreement, then you may still be bound to previous versions of this Arbitration Agreement by reason of your separate agreement to those previous versions.

If any Dispute is determined not to be subject to arbitration or resolution in small claims court, the exclusive jurisdiction and venue for proceedings concerning such Dispute shall be the federal or state courts of competent jurisdiction in New York, and shall be interpreted, governed, and enforced in accordance with substantive and procedural law of the State of New York, without regard to choice of law or conflict of law provisions.

If you or Future Parties files or causes to be filed in court (other than small claims court) a complaint alleging a Dispute that is subject to arbitration under this Arbitration Agreement, the defendant/respondent will notify the party or the party’s attorney (if an attorney has entered an appearance) of the existence of this Arbitration Agreement, and request that the complaint be withdrawn. If the party does not withdraw the action within 10 calendar days of service of that notice, and the defendant/respondent successfully moves to compel arbitration of the Dispute, the defendant/respondent shall be entitled to its costs and fees (including reasonable attorneys’ fees) incurred in seeking to enforce this Arbitration Agreement.

Class Action / Jury Trial Waiver

You and Future Parties agree that, to the fullest extent permitted by law, each party is waiving the right to a trial by jury or to participate as a plaintiff, claimant, or class member in any class, collective, consolidated (other than any batching procedures conducted by the arbitral forum), private attorney general, or representative proceeding. This means that you and Future Parties may not bring a claim on behalf of a class or group and may not bring a claim on behalf of any other person unless doing so as a parent, guardian, or ward of a minor or in another similar capacity for an individual who cannot otherwise bring their own individual claim. This also means that you and Future Parties may not participate in any class, collective, consolidated (other than any batching procedures conducted by the arbitral forum), private attorney general, or representative proceeding brought by any third party.

Unless both you and Future Parties agree in writing, any arbitration will be conducted only on an individual basis and not in a class, collective, consolidated (other than any batching procedures conducted by the arbitral forum), or representative proceeding. If any court or arbitrator determines that this Class Action/Jury Trial Waiver is void or unenforceable for any reason or that an arbitration can proceed on a class basis, then the Arbitration Agreement shall be deemed null and void in its entirety, and you and Future Parties shall be deemed not to have agreed to arbitrate Disputes.

To the extent that any claims are allowed to proceed on a class, collective, consolidated (other than any batching procedures conducted by the arbitral forum), or representative basis, such claims must be litigated in a federal or state court of competent jurisdiction in New York ,and the parties agree that litigation of those claims shall be stayed pending the outcome of any individual claims in arbitration.

Notwithstanding the foregoing, you or Future Parties may participate in a class-wide settlement.

Opt-Out Procedures

To opt out of this Arbitration Agreement, you must send us a written Opt-Out Notice by email at ArbitrationNotices@Futurenet.com within the Opt-Out Period. The Opt-Out Notice must contain your full legal name, your complete mailing and email address and phone number, a clear statement that you wish to opt out of this Arbitration Agreement, and your signature. If your Opt-Out Period has passed, you are not eligible to opt out of this Arbitration Agreement. If you opt out of this Arbitration Agreement, all other provisions of the Terms will continue to apply to you. Additionally, if you opt out of this Arbitration Agreement, you may still be bound to previous versions of this Arbitration Agreement by reason of your separate agreement to those previous versions. In other words, opting out of this Arbitration Agreement shall have no effect on any previous, other, or future arbitration agreements you may enter into with Future Parties. As stated above, if you do not opt out of this Arbitration Agreement within the Opt-Out Period, then you will be bound to the terms and conditions of this Arbitration Agreement which shall supersede and replace in its entirety all previous versions of Future Parties’ arbitration agreements and class action provisions. If you timely provide Future Parties’ with a valid Opt-Out Notice, all Disputes shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of, and you consent to venue in, the state and federal courts located in New York.

Rules and Governing Law

Mandatory Pre-Arbitration Notice and Informal Dispute Resolution Procedures: You and we agree that good-faith, informal efforts to resolve disputes often can result in a prompt, cost-effective and mutually beneficial outcome. Therefore, in the event of a Dispute, you and Future Parties each agree to send the other party a written Notice of Dispute. A Notice of Dispute from you to Future Parties must be emailed to the Notice Address. Any Notice of Dispute must include (i) the claimant’s full legal name, complete mailing address, and email address; (ii) a description of the nature and basis of the claim or dispute; (iii) any relevant facts regarding claimant’s use of the Site, including whether claimant receives any emails associated with the Site, whether claimant has made a purchase of Products, and if so, the date(s) of the purchase(s); and (iv) a personally signed statement from the claimant (and not their counsel) verifying the accuracy of the contents of the Notice. The Notice must be individualized, meaning it can concern only your dispute and no other person’s dispute. Future Parties will send any Notice of Dispute to you at the email address or mailing address it has for you, if any.

After receipt of a Notice of Dispute, the parties shall engage in a good faith effort to resolve the Dispute for a period of 60 days (which can be extended by agreement). You and we agree that, after receipt of the Notice of Dispute, the recipient may request an individualized telephone or video settlement conference (which can be held after the 60-day period) and both parties will attend (with counsel, if represented). You and we agree that the parties (and counsel, if represented) shall work cooperatively to schedule the conference at the earliest mutually-convenient time and to seek to reach a resolution.

Compliance with this Mandatory Pre-Arbitration Notice and Informal Dispute Resolution Procedures section is a condition precedent to initiating arbitration. Any applicable limitations period (including statute of limitations) and any filing fee deadlines shall be tolled while the parties engage in the informal dispute resolution procedures set forth in this subsection. All of the Mandatory Pre-Arbitration Notice and Informal Dispute Resolution Procedures are essential so that you and Future Parties have a meaningful opportunity to resolve disputes informally. If any aspect of these requirements has not been met, the parties agree that a court of competent jurisdiction may enjoin the filing or stay the prosecution of an arbitration. Nothing in this paragraph limits the right of a party to seek damages for non-compliance with these Procedures in arbitration.

If the parties cannot resolve the Dispute through the Informal Dispute Resolution Procedures above, you and Future Parties each agree that all Disputes shall be resolved exclusively through final and binding individual arbitration, rather than in court. The parties may agree to waive hearings and resolve Disputes through submission of documents. Any arbitration hearing will be conducted remotely by telephone or video conference to the extent possible, but if the arbitrator determines, or the parties agree, that a hearing should be conducted in person, the arbitration hearing will take place as close to your residence as practicable, or another agreed upon locale, and shall be before one arbitrator.

All Disputes shall be submitted to NAM, for arbitration before one arbitrator. The arbitration will be administered by NAM in accordance with the NAM Rules, except as modified by this Arbitration Agreement. A party who desires to initiate arbitration must provide the other party with a written Demand for Arbitration as specified in the NAM Rules. A form for initiating arbitration proceedings is available on NAM’s website at https://www.namadr.com/resources/rules-fees-forms/. You and we agree that the party initiating arbitration must submit a certification that they have complied with and completed the Mandatory Pre-Arbitration Notice and Informal Dispute Resolution Procedures requirements referenced above, and that they are a party to the Arbitration Agreement enclosed with or attached to the demand for arbitration. The demand for arbitration and certification must be personally signed by the party initiating arbitration (and their counsel, if represented). The parties agree that submission of the certification shall be required for the claim to be deemed properly filed. For additional information on how to commence an arbitration proceeding, you can contact NAM at customerservice@namadr.com.

If NAM determines that 25 or more substantially similar arbitration demands presented by or with the assistance, coordination, or cooperation of the same law firm, group of law firms, cooperating law firms, or organization are allowed to be submitted for arbitration, NAM’s mass filing fee structure shall apply and the parties agree that the arbitrations will proceed in accordance with the batching process as follows: (i) NAM shall administer the arbitration demands in batches of at least 25 claims, with the discretion to create additional batches if NAM finds that they are necessary to facilitate the efficient resolution of demands; (ii) NAM shall provide for the resolution of each batch as a single consolidated arbitration with one procedural calendar and one hearing (if any) and one final award; and (iii) following such determination of a mass filing, NAM shall apply a single initial filing fee and administrative fee per batch for each side with respect to the fees set forth in NAM’s fee schedule. You agree to cooperate in good faith to implement this batch approach to facilitate the efficient resolution of these claims. All parties agree that arbitrations are of a “substantially similar nature” for purposes of this batching procedure for claims administered by NAM if they arise out of or relate to the same event or factual scenario and raise the same or similar legal issues and seek the same or similar relief. This batching procedure for claims administered by NAM shall in no way be interpreted as authorizing class arbitrations of any kind. Future Parties reserve all rights and defenses as to each and any demand and claimant. If any court or arbitrator determines that this batching procedure for claims administered by NAM and the ADR Services Batching Procedure (see below) are both void or unenforceable for any reason or that an arbitration can proceed on a class basis, then the Arbitration Agreement shall be deemed null and void in its entirety, and you and Future Parties shall be deemed not to have agreed to arbitrate Disputes.

If NAM notifies the parties in writing that it is not available to arbitrate any claim, or if NAM is otherwise unable to arbitrate any claim, that claim shall be submitted to ADR Services, for final and binding individual arbitration before one arbitrator. The arbitration will be administered by ADR Services in accordance with the ADR Services Rules, except as modified by this Arbitration Agreement. If there are 20 or more substantially similar claims that are allowed to be submitted for arbitration but cannot be arbitrated by NAM, and are presented to ADR Services by or with the assistance, coordination, or cooperation of the same law firm, group of law firms, cooperating law firms, or organization, ADR Services shall (i) administer those claims in at least 20 batches, with the discretion to create additional batches if ADR Services finds that they are necessary to facilitate the efficient resolution of demands; and (ii) apply a single initial filing fee and administrative fee per batch for each side with respect to the fees set forth in ADR Services’ then-current Mass Consumer Non-Employment Arbitration Fee Schedule. You agree to cooperate in good faith to implement this ADR Services Batching Procedure to facilitate the efficient resolution of these claims. This ADR Services Batching Procedure shall in no way be interpreted as authorizing class arbitrations of any kind. Future Parties reserve all rights and defenses as to each and any demand and claimant.

Notwithstanding any choice of law or other provision in these Terms, the parties agree and acknowledge that this Arbitration Agreement evidences a transaction involving interstate commerce and that the FAA, will govern its interpretation and enforcement and any proceedings under it. It is the intent of the parties that the FAA and the NAM Rules or ADR Services Rules (as applicable) shall preempt all state laws to the fullest extent permitted by law. If the FAA and the NAM Rules or ADR Services Rules (as applicable) are found to not apply to any issue that arises under this Arbitration Agreement, then that issue shall be interpreted, governed, and enforced in accordance with substantive and procedural law of the State of New York without regard to choice of law or conflict of law provisions.

At the conclusion of the arbitration proceeding, the arbitrator shall issue a reasoned written decision sufficient to explain the essential findings and conclusions on which the award is based. An arbitrator’s award that has been fully satisfied shall not be entered in any court.

As in court, you and Future Parties agree that any counsel representing a party in arbitration certifies when initiating and proceeding in arbitration that they are complying with the requirements of Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 11(b) and any applicable state laws of similar import, including certification that the claim or relief sought is neither frivolous nor brought for an improper purpose. The arbitrator is authorized to impose any sanctions under the NAM Rules or ADR Services Rules (as applicable), Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 11, or applicable federal or state law, against all appropriate represented parties and counsel.

Except as expressly provided in the Arbitration Agreement, the arbitrator may grant any remedy, relief, or outcome that the parties could have received in court, including awards of attorneys’ fees and costs, in accordance with applicable law.

Arbitrator’s Fees: You and we agree that arbitration should be cost-effective for all parties and that any party may engage with NAM, ADR Services (as applicable), and/or the arbitrator to address the apportionment of the arbitrator’s fees.

Confidentiality: The parties agree that the arbitrator is authorized to issue an order requiring that confidential information of either party disclosed during the arbitration (whether in documents or orally) may not be used or disclosed except in connection with the arbitration or a proceeding to enforce the arbitration award and that any permitted court filing of confidential information must be done under seal to the furthest extent permitted by law.

Requirement of Individualized Relief: The parties agree that the arbitrator is authorized, upon either party’s request, to award declaratory or injunctive relief only in favor of the individual party seeking relief and only to the extent necessary to provide relief warranted by that party’s individual claim. If any of the prohibitions on non-individualized declaratory or injunctive relief, class, representative, and private attorney general claims, or consolidation set forth under this Arbitration Agreement are found to be unenforceable with respect to a particular claim or with respect to a particular request for relief (such as a request for injunctive relief sought with respect to a particular claim), then, after exhaustion of all appeals, the parties agree such a claim or request for relief shall be decided by a court of competent jurisdiction, after all other arbitrable claims and requests for relief are arbitrated.

You agree that any arbitrations between you and Future Parties will be subject to this Arbitration Agreement and not to any prior arbitration agreement you had with Future Parties, and, notwithstanding any provision in these Terms to the contrary, you agree that this Arbitration Agreement amends any prior arbitration agreement you had with Future Parties, including with respect to claims that arose before this or any prior arbitration agreement.

Opt-Out of Future Changes to Arbitration Agreement

Notwithstanding any provision to the contrary, if Future Parties make any future change to this Arbitration Agreement (other than a change to the Notice Address or other non-material changes), you may reject any such change by sending Future Parties an email to ArbitrationNotices@Futurenet.com within 30 days of the posting of the amended arbitration agreement that provides: (i) your full legal name, (ii) your complete mailing address, (iii) your phone number, (iv) the change(s) you are rejecting, (v) and, if applicable, the username or email address associated with any purchase from Future Parties. It must include a statement, personally signed by you, that you wish to reject the specified change to the Arbitration Agreement. This is not an opt out of arbitration altogether.

Severability & Survival

If any provision of this Arbitration Agreement, or a portion thereof, is found to be void, invalid, or otherwise unenforceable, then that portion shall be deemed to be severable and, if possible, superseded by a valid, enforceable provision, or portion thereof, that matches the intent of the original provision, or portion thereof, as closely as possible. The remainder of this Arbitration Agreement shall continue to be enforceable and valid according to the terms contained herein.

Notwithstanding the foregoing, if any court or arbitrator determines that the batching procedure for claims administered by NAM (set forth above) and the ADR Services Batching Procedure are both void or unenforceable for any reason or that an arbitration can proceed on a class basis, then, after exhaustion of all appeals, the Arbitration Agreement shall be deemed null and void in its entirety.

This Arbitration Agreement shall survive termination of these Terms. Except as provided in the opt-out provisions set forth above, the terms and conditions of this Arbitration Agreement shall supersede and replace any and all previous arbitration and class action/jury waiver agreements you may have entered into with Future Parties.

Notice for California users

Under California Civil Code Section 1789.3, California users of the online services are entitled to the following specific consumer rights notice: The Complaint Assistance Unit of the Division of Consumer Services of the California Department of Consumer Affairs may be contacted in writing at 400 R Street, Suite 1080, Sacramento, California 95814, or by telephone at (916) 445-1254 or (800) 952-5210.

Notice to New Jersey users

The section on limitation of liability do not apply to New Jersey residents to the extent that New Jersey’s Truth-in-Consumer Contract, Warranty, and Notice Act (TCCWNA) (N.J.S.A. §§ 56:12-14 to 56:12-18) prohibits such application.

Miscellaneous

You will not assign any of your rights or delegate any of your obligations under these Terms, in whole or in part, by operation of law or otherwise, without our prior written consent. No assignment or delegation relieves you of any of your obligations under these Terms. We may assign or transfer any of our rights or obligations hereunder without your permission and without notice to you.

The failure by us to enforce any right or provision of these Terms will not constitute a waiver of future enforcement of that right or provision. The waiver of any right or provision will be effective only if in writing and signed by our duly authorized representative. Except as expressly set forth in these Terms, the exercise by either party of any of its remedies under these Terms will be without prejudice to its other remedies under these Terms or otherwise.

These Terms do not and are not intended to confer any rights or remedies upon any person other than you.

If any provision of these Terms is invalid, illegal, void, or unenforceable, then that provision will be deemed severed from these Terms and will not affect the validity or enforceability of the remaining provisions of these Terms.

Our order confirmation, these Terms and any other applicable terms, such as our Website Terms of Use and our Privacy Notice will be deemed the final and integrated agreement between you and us on the matters contained in these Terms.

Meet 9 kids who care

The Week Junior teamed up with The Drew Barrymore Show to discover children who are making a difference in the world. “We regularly feature ‘Drew Gooders,’ people who are helping others, and we wanted to put a spotlight on some of the young people who are already making a big impact,” Drew Barrymore told The Week Junior. “These kids are making the world a better place, and we are so inspired by them. We can’t wait to see what they do next!” Find out about them below.

Sharing the love of reading

Anaik Sachdev, age 11, Arizona

Reading is Anaik Sachdev’s “happy place,” he told The Week Junior. His passion for books drove him to launch Loving Library in 2020. He started by collecting used books and donating them to Covid patients in nearby hospitals. Since then, Sachdev has given away about 15,000 books to people in underserved communities. He has established 17 chapters of Loving Library around the world and enlisted 22 other children, including his younger brother, Jovin, to help him collect and distribute books. Inside each donated book, Sachdev places a Loving Library sticker that he designed so the person who opens the book knows that they are loved.

Assisting seniors with technology

Jaiden, Keanu, and Milaan Seeliger, ages 14, 14, and 13, California

When the Seeliger brothers began to FaceTime with their great-grandmother after she moved into a nursing home, they realized how important her cell phone was to her. This inspired them to start Tech-Angels, an organization that ensures older people have the technology they need and know how to use it. The brothers have helped more than 300 seniors navigate their devices during sessions they’ve held in elder-care homes. They have also donated 50 used devices to seniors. “We love seeing the smiles on their faces when they learn something new or connect with their family, sometimes for the first time,” Jaiden told The Week Junior.

Creating crayons for everyone

Bellen Woodard, age 13, Virginia

“The world’s first crayon activist” is how Bellen Woodard describes herself. When she was in third grade, she heard classmates refer to the peach crayon as the “skin color” crayon. But Woodard knew that there are many different shades of skin, so she took action. With help from her mom, she developed and marketed More Than Peach crayons. Woodard’s package of 12 crayons in different shades of “skin color” is now available at Target. She is also writing a book that will be released next year. Woodard told The Week Junior that she loves it when children send her letters written with their More Than Peach crayons.

Selling lemonade to help animals

Delanie Dennis, age 12, Florida

Rescuing animals is a big part of Delanie Dennis’ life. Among her family’s rescue animals are five dogs, three ferrets, two sugar gliders, two horses, two mini donkeys, and a tortoise. This passion for rescue animals inspired Dennis to start Delanie’s Lemonade Stand outside her parents’ restaurant in 2019. The money Dennis has raised, more than $100,000 so far, has helped fund 36 different rescues. This year, she set up her stand outside a New York Yankees spring training game at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida. Dennis raised awareness and money for her cause and also got to throw out the game’s first pitch. “It was unreal,” she told The Week Junior about the experience. “My pitch was perfectly straight too!”

Saving food scraps at school

Parth Gupta, age 12, Missouri

When Parth Gupta was in third grade and noticed how much food was going into the trash during lunch, he was inspired to start a compost program at his elementary school. The initiative began with Gupta and two other students collecting food scraps—and grew until the school’s total trash was reduced by 50%. “That was amazing and kept me going,” Gupta told The Week Junior. Today, about 20 students, including Gupta’s younger brother, Sheil, volunteer to collect scraps from every classroom and put them in the school’s new outdoor compost bins. Now in sixth grade, Gupta is planning to start a compost program at his middle school.

Promoting the power of slime

Alexa Dunsche, age 11, New York

Mixing batches of slime kept Alexa Dunsche busy during the pandemic. She made so much slime, in fact, that she got the idea to sell it at farmers’ markets near her home in Brooklyn, New York, and donate the proceeds to charity. Since starting Brooklyn Slime in 2021, she has sold more than 1,000 jars and raised more than $5,000 for the nonprofit No Kid Hungry. Dunsche also helps kids discover the benefits of using slime. “I have anxiety, and stretching slime helps me relax,” she told The Week Junior. Although she offers slime in different textures and colors, she insists she doesn’t have a favorite. “They’re all my little slime babies,” she said.

Recycling 400,000+ batteries

Nihal Tammana, age 15, New Jersey

“My friends call me Battery Boy,” Nihal Tammana jokes. In 2019, he started Recycle My Battery, an initiative that has kept more than 400,000 batteries out of landfills. He places recycling bins in schools, libraries, and community centers and recycles the used batteries that people drop off. Because the cost of processing the bins has risen—it is now $110 to recycle two of them—Tammana works to raise awareness for his cause. Last year, he placed 31,204 batteries in a line, setting a new Guinness World Record. “What keeps me going is the chance to make things better for our planet and future generations,” Tammana said.

Hello to The Week Junior community,

Election season is always an exciting time in the United States, and there’s a great deal at stake this year, from the balance of power in the House and Senate to numerous positions at the state and local level. It’s a perfect opportunity to help young people understand how our democracy works.

The Week Junior is here, as always, to help kids make sense of what can be a confusing process. This is an informed, aware, and involved generation of children, and we know they want their questions answered and want to feel a part of what’s happening.

We also know they will have opinions, which we encourage you to explore with them and support. I hope our resources build excitement and spark family discussions in your home.

Andrea is in charge of deciding what goes into each issue of The Week Junior and making sure we publish the best possible magazine every week. She grew up in a small town in New York and always loved reading and writing. She also likes riding her bike, traveling to fun places, watching her son play baseball, and cooking for her family and friends. Her favorite food is raspberries.

Mindy Walker, Deputy Editor

Mindy gets to brainstorm ideas and edit stories so they are informative and enjoyable to read. She grew up in Missouri and dreamed of moving to New York City to work in magazines after college. And she did! Now she lives outside the city with her husband, three daughters, and energetic dog Mango. Her hobby is being a carpool ninja.

Vicky uses her design skills to make sure every page of the magazine looks amazing. She enjoys playing with type size and having fun with color to make the stories exciting to read. She has a 15-year-old daughter, and her home is always full of children—just the way she likes it. She also speaks fluent Japanese.

Employees of Sponsor, or any of its or their respective parent(s), subsidiaries, affiliates, advertising agencies, suppliers, distributors, retailers or any other company or individual involved with the design, production, execution or distribution of the Sweepstakes, and their immediate family (spouse, parents and stepparents, siblings and stepsiblings, and children and stepchildren) and household members (people who share the same residence at least three (3) months out of the year) of each such employee are not eligible. The Sweepstakes is subject to all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations. 3. Sweepstakes Entry Period.

The Sweepstakes Entry Period shall begin on May 3, 2021 at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time (“ET”) and end on May 15, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. ET (the “Sweepstakes Entry Period”). Entries received outside the Sweepstakes Entry Period will be void. Sponsor is the official time keeper for this Sweepstakes.

4. How to Enter the Sweepstakes.

During the Sweepstakes Entry Period, to receive one (1) entry in the Sweepstakes, either: (i) email your name and address, and the name and email of your nominated teacher (“Nominee”) to contests@theweekjunior.com; or (ii) comment on Sponsor’s Facebook page the name of your Nominee in response to Sponsor’s call to action post (each and “Entry”). In order to be eligible, Nominees must be full time educators to grade school students. In addition, Nominees must meet the Entrant eligibility requirements outlined herein. You must include “Teacher Appreciation Week Sweepstakes” in the subject line of the Entry email. All entries become the sole and exclusive property of Sponsor and will not be acknowledged or returned. Maximum of one (1) Sweepstakes Entry per person, per email address, per Facebook account during the Sweepstakes Entry Period. Entries beyond the permitted number are void. Use of a multiple email addresses or any automated system to enter is prohibited and will result in disqualification.

Sponsor may reject any Entry in its sole discretion if the Entry in whole or in part: contains any illegal or offensive activity, or is obscene, defamatory, likely to incite violence or illegal; includes any material in violation of any third-party’s rights; contains material which is (or promotes activities which are) sexually explicit, obscene, pornographic, violent, self-mutilating or mutilating of animals, discriminatory (based upon race, sex, religion, natural origin, physical disability, sexual orientation or age); is threatening, profane or harassing; portrays Sponsor or any person or entity negatively; and/or which is otherwise deemed to be inappropriate or demeaning in Sponsor’s sole discretion. 5. Sweepstakes Winner Selection.

On or about June 1, 2021 (the “Drawing Date”), Sponsor will select one (1) entry in a random drawing among all valid entries received during the Sweepstakes Entry Period. On or about June 1, 2021, Sponsor will contact the potential Prize winning Nominee (“Potential Prize Winner”) and Entrant by email using the email address potential Entrant submitted when entering the Sweepstakes or through Entrant by using the Facebook account Entrant used to enter the Sweepstakes. Failure by Potential Prize Winner or Entrant, as applicable, to respond to the initial verification within 48 hours of notification may result in disqualification, and Sponsor may, at its discretion, select an alternate Potential Prize Winner from all remaining valid entries. 6. Prize.

10. General Conditions.

This Sweepstakes is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with Facebook. Entrant’s entry shall comply with Sponsor, Facebook and/or any third-party platform provider’s terms of service/use and privacy policies, and shall not: (a) contain material which is (or promoting activities which are) sexually explicit, obscene, pornographic, violent, self-mutilation, discriminatory (based on race, sex, religion, natural origin, physical disability, sexual orientation or age), illegal (e.g. underage drinking, substance abuse, computer hacking, etc.), offensive, threatening, profane, or harassing; (b) contain content which would be derogatory and/or insulting of any others, including Sponsor and/or other persons or entities, products or services; (c) contain content which refers to and/or is complimentary of any competitors of Sponsor or which is complimentary of and/or refers to any product competitive with any product or service of Sponsor; (d) include personally identifiable information or any other information or indicia of any person other than Entrant and/or Nominee and should the Entrant include personally identifiable information about him/herself in his/her entry, Entrant acknowledges and agrees that such information will be disclosed publicly and Entrant is solely responsible for any consequences thereof; and (e) contain material that violates or infringes another’s rights, including but not limited to privacy, publicity or intellectual property rights, including copyright infringement. Sponsor reserves the right to cancel, suspend and/or modify the Sweepstakes, or any part of it, if any fraud, technical failures or any other factor beyond Sponsor’s reasonable control impairs the integrity or proper functioning of the Sweepstakes, as determined by Sponsor in its sole discretion. Sponsor reserves the right in its sole discretion to disqualify any individual it finds to be tampering with the entry process or the operation of the Sweepstakes or to be acting in violation of these Official Rules or any other promotion or in an unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner. Any attempt by any person to deliberately undermine the legitimate operation of the Sweepstakes may be a violation of criminal and civil law and, should such an attempt be made, Sponsor reserves the right to seek damages from any such person to the fullest extent permitted by law. Sponsor’s failure to enforce any term of these Official Rules shall not constitute a waiver of that provision. In the event that Sponsor experiences a technical failure during admission of the Sweepstakes that causes the Sweepstakes to be suspended, Sponsor shall select a winner(s) by random drawing from all valid entries received up to the point of the technical failure.

In the event of a dispute regarding the identity of any Entrant, the authorized account holder of the email address used to enter the Sweepstakes will be deemed to be the Entrant. The “authorized account holder” is the natural person assigned an email address by an Internet access provider, online service provider or other organization responsible for assigning email addresses for the domain associated with the submitted address. Potential winner(s) of any Prize may be required to show proof of being the authorized account holder to be awarded the Prize. All entry information becomes the sole and exclusive property of Sponsor and will not be returned or cancelled.

11. Limitations of Liability.

The Released Parties are not responsible for: (a) any incorrect or inaccurate information, whether caused by Entrant, or programming associated with or used in the Sweepstakes; (b) technical failures of any kind, including but not limited to malfunctions, interruptions, or disconnections in phone lines or network hardware or software; (c) unauthorized human intervention in any part of the entry process or the Sweepstakes; (d) technical or human error, which may occur in the administration of the Sweepstakes or the processing of entries; or (e) any injury or damage to persons or property, which may be caused, directly or indirectly, in whole or in part, from Entrant’s participation in the Sweepstakes or receipt or use or misuse of any Prize. If for any reason an Entrant’s entry is confirmed to have been erroneously deleted, lost or otherwise destroyed or corrupted, Entrant’s sole remedy is another entry in the Sweepstakes. If, for any reason, the Sweepstakes cannot be executed as planned, including, but not limited to, any governmental order, force majeure, epidemic, pandemic, social media mandate, printing, administrative or other error of any kind, transmission failure, infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes beyond the control of Sponsor that corrupt or affect the security, administration, fairness, integrity or proper conduct of the Sweepstakes, or if the Sweepstakes is compromised or becomes technically corrupted in any way, electronically or otherwise, Sponsor reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to cancel, modify or terminate the Sweepstakes and, if terminated before the original end date, to select the winners from among all eligible, non-suspect entries received as of the date/time of termination.

BY ENTERING THE SWEEPSTAKES, ENTRANT AND NOMINEE AGREE THAT, TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW: (1) ANY AND ALL DISPUTES, CLAIMS AND CAUSES OF ACTION ARISING OUT OF OR CONNECTED WITH THE SWEEPSTAKES, OR ANY PRIZE(S) AWARDED WILL BE LIMITED TO ACTUAL, OUT-OF-POCKET COSTS INCURRED (IF ANY) NOT TO EXCEED TEN DOLLARS ($10.00), BUT IN NO EVENT WILL ATTORNEYS’ FEES BE AWARDED OR RECOVERABLE; AND (2) UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WILL ANY ENTRANT OR NOMINEE BE PERMITTED TO OBTAIN ANY AWARD FOR, AND ENTRANT AND NOMINEE HEREBY KNOWINGLY AND EXPRESSLY WAIVES ALL RIGHTS TO SEEK, PUNITIVE, INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL OR SPECIAL DAMAGES, LOST PROFITS AND/OR ANY OTHER DAMAGES AND/OR ANY RIGHTS TO HAVE DAMAGES MULTIPLIED OR OTHERWISE INCREASED. SOME JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW THE FOREGOING LIMITATIONS OR EXCLUSION OF LIABILITY, SO THE ABOVE MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU.

EACH ENTRANT AND NOMINEE UNDERSTANDS AND AGREES THAT ALL RIGHTS UNDER SECTION 1542 OF THE CIVIL CODE OF CALIFORNIA AND ANY SIMILAR LAW OF ANY STATE OR TERRITORY OF THE UNITED STATES ARE HEREBY EXPRESSLY WAIVED BY HIM/HER AGAINST THE SWEEPSTAKES ENTITIES. SECTION 1542 READS AS FOLLOWS:

“CERTAIN CLAIMS NOT AFFECTED BY A GENERAL RELEASE. A GENERAL RELEASE DOES NOT EXTEND TO CLAIMS THAT THE CREDITOR OR RELEASING PARTY DOES NOT KNOW OR SUSPECT TO EXIST IN HIS OR HER FAVOR AT THE TIME OF EXECUTING THE RELEASE, AND THAT IF KNOWN BY HIM OR HER WOULD HAVE MATERIALLY AFFECTED HIS OR HER SETTLEMENT WITH THE DEBTOR OR RELEASING PARTY.”

12. Disputes.

Except where prohibited by law, as a condition of participating in this Sweepstakes, each Entrant and Nominee agrees that (1) any and all disputes and causes of action arising out of or connected with this Sweepstakes, including but not limited to Prize awarded, shall be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class action, and exclusively by final and binding arbitration under the rules of JAMS and held at the JAMS regional office nearest the Entrant or Nominee, as applicable; (2) the Federal Arbitration Act shall govern the interpretation, enforcement and all proceedings at such arbitration; and (3) judgment upon such arbitration award may be entered in any court having jurisdiction. Under no circumstances will any Entrant and/or Nominee be permitted to obtain awards for, and Entrant and Nominee hereby waive all rights to claim, punitive, incidental or consequential damages, or any other damages, including attorneys’ fees, other than Entrant’s or Nominee’s actual out-of-pocket expenses (i.e., costs associated with participating in this Sweepstakes), and Entrant and Nominee further waive all rights to have damages multiplied or increased. 14. Sweepstakes Results.

By entering, each Entrant agrees to: (a) comply with and be bound by these Official Rules and the decisions of the Sponsor and/or its designee(s) which are binding and final in all matters relating to these Sweepstakes; (b) release and hold harmless Sponsor, Instagram, and Facebook, and their respective parent, subsidiary and affiliated companies, the Prize suppliers and any other organizations and/or persons responsible for sponsoring, fulfilling, administering, advertising or promoting the Sweepstakes, and all of their respective past and present officers, directors, employees, agents and representatives (collectively, the “Released Parties”) from and against any and all claims, expenses and liability, including but not limited to negligence and damages of any kind to persons and property, including but not limited to invasion of privacy (under appropriation, intrusion, public disclosure of private facts, false light in the public eye or other legal theory), defamation, slander, libel, violation of right of publicity, infringement of trademark, copyright or other intellectual property rights, property damage, or death or personal injury arising out of or relating to an Entrant’s entry, creation of an entry or submission of an entry, participation in the Sweepstakes, acceptance or use or misuse of Prize (including any travel or activity related thereto) and/or the broadcast, exploitation or use of entry; and (c) indemnify, defend and hold harmless the Released Parties from and against any and all claims, expenses, and liabilities (including reasonable attorneys’ fees) arising out of or relating to an Entrant’s participation in the Sweepstakes and/or Entrant’s acceptance, use or misuse of any Prize.

9. Publicity.

Except where prohibited, participation in the Sweepstakes constitutes each Prize Winner’s consent to Sponsor’s and its agents’ use of each such winner’s name, likeness, photograph, voice, opinions and/or hometown and state for promotional purposes in any media, worldwide, without further payment or consideration.

10. General Conditions.

This Sweepstakes is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with Instagram or Facebook. Entrant’s entry shall comply with Sponsor, Instagram, Facebook and/or any third-party platform provider’s terms of service/use and privacy policies, and shall not: (a) contain material which is (or promoting activities which are) sexually explicit, obscene, pornographic, violent, self-mutilation, discriminatory (based on race, sex, religion, natural origin, physical disability, sexual orientation or age), illegal (e.g. underage drinking, substance abuse, computer hacking, etc.), offensive, threatening, profane, or harassing; (b) contain content which would be derogatory and/or insulting of any others, including Sponsor and/or other persons or entities, products or services; (c) contain content which refers to and/or is complimentary of any competitors of Sponsor or which is complimentary of and/or refers to any product competitive with any product or service of Sponsor; (d) include personally identifiable information or any other information or indicia of any person other than entrant and should the entrant include personally identifiable information about him/herself in his/her entry, entrant acknowledges and agrees that such information will be disclosed publicly and entrant is solely responsible for any consequences thereof; and (e) contain material that violates or infringes another’s rights, including but not limited to privacy, publicity or intellectual property rights, including copyright infringement. Sponsor reserves the right to cancel, suspend and/or modify the Sweepstakes, or any part of it, if any fraud, technical failures or any other factor beyond Sponsor’s reasonable control impairs the integrity or proper functioning of the Sweepstakes, as determined by Sponsor in its sole discretion. Sponsor reserves the right in its sole discretion to disqualify any individual it finds to be tampering with the entry process or the operation of the Sweepstakes or to be acting in violation of these Official Rules or any other promotion or in an unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner. Any attempt by any person to deliberately undermine the legitimate operation of the Sweepstakes may be a violation of criminal and civil law and, should such an attempt be made, Sponsor reserves the right to seek damages from any such person to the fullest extent permitted by law. Sponsor’s failure to enforce any term of these Official Rules shall not constitute a waiver of that provision. In the event that Sponsor experiences a technical failure during admission of the Sweepstakes that causes the Sweepstakes to be suspended, Sponsor shall select a winner(s) by random drawing from all valid entries received up to the point of the technical failure.

In the event of a dispute regarding the identity of any Entrant, the authorized account holder of the email address used to enter the Sweepstakes will be deemed to be the Entrant. The “authorized account holder” is the natural person assigned an email address by an Internet access provider, online service provider or other organization responsible for assigning email addresses for the domain associated with the submitted address. Potential winner(s) of any Prize may be required to show proof of being the authorized account holder to be awarded the Prize. All entry information becomes the sole and exclusive property of Sponsor and will not be returned or cancelled.

11. Limitations of Liability.

The Released Parties are not responsible for: (a) any incorrect or inaccurate information, whether caused by Entrant, or programming associated with or used in the Sweepstakes; (b) technical failures of any kind, including but not limited to malfunctions, interruptions, or disconnections in phone lines or network hardware or software; (c) unauthorized human intervention in any part of the entry process or the Sweepstakes; (d) technical or human error, which may occur in the administration of the Sweepstakes or the processing of entries; or (e) any injury or damage to persons or property, which may be caused, directly or indirectly, in whole or in part, from Entrant’s participation in the Sweepstakes or receipt or use or misuse of any Prize. If for any reason an Entrant’s entry is confirmed to have been erroneously deleted, lost or otherwise destroyed or corrupted, Entrant’s sole remedy is another entry in the Sweepstakes. No more than the stated number of Prizes will be awarded. If, for any reason, the Sweepstakes cannot be executed as planned, including, but not limited to, any governmental order, force majeure, epidemic, pandemic, social media mandate, printing, administrative or other error of any kind, transmission failure, infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes beyond the control of Sponsor that corrupt or affect the security, administration, fairness, integrity or proper conduct of the Sweepstakes, or if the Sweepstakes is compromised or becomes technically corrupted in any way, electronically or otherwise, Sponsor reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to cancel, modify or terminate the Sweepstakes and, if terminated before the original end date, to select the winners from among all eligible, non-suspect entries received as of the date/time of termination.

BY ENTERING THE SWEEPSTAKES, ENTRANT AGREES THAT, TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW: (1) ANY AND ALL DISPUTES, CLAIMS AND CAUSES OF ACTION ARISING OUT OF OR CONNECTED WITH THE SWEEPSTAKES, OR ANY PRIZE(S) AWARDED WILL BE LIMITED TO ACTUAL, OUT-OF-POCKET COSTS INCURRED (IF ANY) NOT TO EXCEED TEN DOLLARS ($10.00), BUT IN NO EVENT WILL ATTORNEYS’ FEES BE AWARDED OR RECOVERABLE; AND (2) UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WILL ANY ENTRANT BE PERMITTED TO OBTAIN ANY AWARD FOR, AND ENTRANT HEREBY KNOWINGLY AND EXPRESSLY WAIVES ALL RIGHTS TO SEEK, PUNITIVE, INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL OR SPECIAL DAMAGES, LOST PROFITS AND/OR ANY OTHER DAMAGES AND/OR ANY RIGHTS TO HAVE DAMAGES MULTIPLIED OR OTHERWISE INCREASED. SOME JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW THE FOREGOING LIMITATIONS OR EXCLUSION OF LIABILITY, SO THE ABOVE MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU.

EACH ENTRANT UNDERSTANDS AND AGREES THAT ALL RIGHTS UNDER SECTION 1542 OF THE CIVIL CODE OF CALIFORNIA AND ANY SIMILAR LAW OF ANY STATE OR TERRITORY OF THE UNITED STATES ARE HEREBY EXPRESSLY WAIVED BY HIM/HER AGAINST THE SWEEPSTAKES ENTITIES. SECTION 1542 READS AS FOLLOWS:

“CERTAIN CLAIMS NOT AFFECTED BY A GENERAL RELEASE. A GENERAL RELEASE DOES NOT EXTEND TO CLAIMS THAT THE CREDITOR OR RELEASING PARTY DOES NOT KNOW OR SUSPECT TO EXIST IN HIS OR HER FAVOR AT THE TIME OF EXECUTING THE RELEASE, AND THAT IF KNOWN BY HIM OR HER WOULD HAVE MATERIALLY AFFECTED HIS OR HER SETTLEMENT WITH THE DEBTOR OR RELEASING PARTY.”

12. Disputes.

Except where prohibited by law, as a condition of participating in this Sweepstakes, each Entrant agrees that (1) any and all disputes and causes of action arising out of or connected with this Sweepstakes, including but not limited to Prize awarded, shall be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class action, and exclusively by final and binding arbitration under the rules of JAMS and held at the JAMS regional office nearest the Entrant; (2) the Federal Arbitration Act shall govern the interpretation, enforcement and all proceedings at such arbitration; and (3) judgment upon such arbitration award may be entered in any court having jurisdiction. Under no circumstances will any Entrant be permitted to obtain awards for, and Entrant hereby waives all rights to claim, punitive, incidental or consequential damages, or any other damages, including attorneys’ fees, other than Entrant’s actual out-of-pocket expenses (i.e., costs associated with participating in this Sweepstakes), and Entrant further waives all rights to have damages multiplied or increased. Entrants further agree that any and all disputes, claims and causes of action arising out of or connected with this Sweepstakes, or any Prize awarded shall be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class action. SOME JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW THE LIMITATIONS OR EXCLUSION OF LIABILITY FOR INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, SO THE ABOVE MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU. All issues and questions concerning the construction, validity, interpretation and enforceability of these Official Rules, or the rights and obligations of the Entrant and Sponsor in connection with the Sweepstakes, shall be governed by, and construed in accordance with, the laws of the State of New York, without giving effect to any choice of law or conflict of law rules (whether of the State of New York or any other jurisdiction), which would cause the application of the laws of any jurisdiction other than the State of New York.

Notwithstanding the foregoing, in the event that the preceding release is determined by a court of competent jurisdiction to be invalid or void for any reason, Entrant agrees that, by entering the Sweepstakes, (i) any and all disputes, claims, and causes of action arising out of or in connection with the Sweepstakes, or any Prize awarded, shall be resolved individually without resort to any form of class action; (ii) any claims, judgments and awards shall be limited to actual out-of-pocket costs incurred, including costs associated with entering the Sweepstakes, but in no event attorney’s fees; and (iii) under no circumstances will any Entrant be permitted to obtain any award for, and Entrant hereby waives all rights to claim, punitive, incidental or consequential damages and any and all rights to have damages multiplied or otherwise increased and any other damages, other than damages for actual out-of-pocket expenses.

13. Entrant’s Personal Information.

Information collected from Entrants is subject to the Sponsor’s Privacy Policy, which is available at https://theweekjunior.com/privacy. If you are selected as a potential or verified Prize winner, your name, city and state may also be included in a publicly available Winners' List.

14. Sweepstakes Results.

For Sweepstakes results, send a hand-printed, self-addressed, stamped envelope to: “Winner’s List” c/o The Week Junior 50 Books Sweepstakes, 155 East 44th Street, 22nd Floor, New York, NY 10017. Requests for the Winner’s List must be received by Sponsor within 60 calendar days after the end of the Sweepstakes Entry Period.
